Fund a Program
National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is currently seeking funding for a wide range of preventative, educational, research and patient service programming in Northern California and Northern Nevada. To read a detailed proposal for the following programs, please click on the links below or to the left. To read an overview of our Fundable Programs please click on the links below. CKD Education Program: The CKD Education Program provides coordinated educational, support and online services to patients at all stages of CKD, as well as tools, materials and educational opportunities for medical professionals. Currently, the Foundation is approaching corporate and foundation sources for continued funding for this program, targeting those foundations with an interest in increasing healthcare capacity and access, and corporate sources with a specific link to the community of CKD patients or a potential for collaboration on components of the program. Because the program will serve patients in several different regions, community foundations are also being approached to fund those components of the program serving patients in their area. Current year budget for this program is approximately $175,000.

Transplant Community Initiative: The Transplant Community Initiative provides services, support and activities for kidney transplant recipients, as well as a focused public relations and community outreach campaign centering on increasing organ donation and promoting the importance of safe, healthy and ethical living organ donation. The current year programming budget is approximately $50,000.

Healthy Kidneys for Life: The Healthy Kidneys for Life program falls within a number of common foundation funding priorities, including disease prevention; children's health; healthcare for underserved populations and minorities; education; and regional health programs. We are approaching foundations both to fund current Healthy Kidneys for Life programming in Oakland and San Jose, as well as exploring opportunities to expand the program into other regions with a significant need for preventative programming. In order to facilitate current program activities and expansion in areas not currently served, the fundraising goal for Healthy Kidneys for Life is $50,000.

Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) & Kidney Wellness Screenings (KWS): KEEP & KWS also falls within a number of foundation funding priorities, including disease prevention; healthcare for underserved populations; and regional health programs. Because these programs can be held in any number of locations throughout the region, they provide a valuable avenue for connecting with foundations outside the Bay Area and a great opportunity for expanding the NKF's presence throughout the Northern California region. We are currently approaching foundations and corporate partners from throughout Northern California for KEEP & KWS funding. The KEEP fundraising goal for the current year is $33,000 and the KWS goal is $22,500 for a total disease screening budget of $55,500.

Kidney Kids/Family Camp: Both the Kidney Kids Camp and Family Camp programs provide a unique service to children and families with very specific health needs. In addition, the activities available at Kids Camp serve to bolster young camper's self-confidence and independence. The program appeals to foundations with funding priorities centering on youth services and children with special needs, as well as outdoor activities for youth, and life-skills training. The total budget for producing both camps is approximately $35,000.

Patient Scholarships: The Patient Scholarship program provides small grants of $500-$1500 to patients with kidney disease for the purpose of furthering their educational goals. Because of the associated costs of managing kidney disease and the burden disease management can place on work availability, the scholarship program is intended to help patients pay for education that will result in a greater capacity for employment and self-sufficiency in the future. The current budget for the Patient Scholarship program is $10,000.

Research Fellowship Program: The Research Fellowship Program is significant for two main reasons: it serves a critical need in the professional and educational development of physicians pursuing a career in academic nephrology and, at the same time, produces high quality research and data of immediate value to the medical community. The program thus lends itself to two possible avenues for funding. We are approaching both those foundations with giving priorities focusing on medical/scientific research, as well as foundations interested in the professional and educational development of physicians and scientists. The total budget for Research Fellowships in the current cycle is $50,000.
